Hi guys, after my mini motor went bang, well it was more of jack hammer sound, i stripped it out, sold it off as parts and bought myself a nissan A14 motor and 4spd pulsar gearbox. Will attempt to fit it with the help of my mechanic, luckily hes done it before. Will try to get some pics up if you guys are interested?!

I dont think our pulsar is the same as the ones you guys know in the uk. Its a small compact unit that sits under the motor, bolts in under the sump. Currently the motor is stripped down and being rebuilt as we speak, having the head gasflowed and ported, cam reground to 276 degree, when the motor is in i wil have custom headers made up to connect with the free flow system thats currently on the car. While the motor is in bits,im cleaning up the engen bay and stripping down the brakes to fit discs and 13inch rims

this is what i found while stripping the 1310 a series after driving it home with the terrible noise and vibration.:(

We know them as Datsun Cherry. The Nissan "A" engine is a direct development of the BL A-series - so should be pretty easy to install.

Yip, very compact desighn,no cutting needed to the body, only new holes in di subframe, uses the minis driveshafts with automatic apache universals to connect to the inner cv's. The build wont be anything spectacular, its just to get her going again, adding some disc brakes and 13 inch wheels. Next thing on the to do list would be to send in the bottom end,cam and head for machining. Also need to paint the engen bay while its empty

How direct is "direct"...? Same bore spacings/sizes?

You can see here how the engine was developed from the BMC A series to the Datsun A series.

http://datsun1200.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=139792

The siamese ports of the inlet and centre exhaust have been split into 2 seperate ports to give an 8 port non cross flow design.

Not sure about the stroke/bore/centres - it looks more like the size of a BMC B sereis than a BMC A series

believe it or not this conversion was done in trinidad more than ten years ago using an automatic cherry engine. these engines are extremely heavy and carry a very high final drive ratio, it is definitely NOT a huge improvement over the mini's A series especially on small 13 inch wheels. still quite noisy, just picture an only slightly refined mini engine
looks just like this but with a gearbox where the sump is:

this isnt my attempt at a fast mini build, its my daily drive and i need it back on the road as soon as possible. Mini parts are becoming real scarse in sa,while the datsun spares are all over and cheap as chips. As for the weight, the datsun motor and gearbox with oil weight less than the dry mini motor and gearbox less carb, starter, altenator, ect. Got the car on axle stands and took the wheels off, want to replace all the rubbers and bushes on the front subframe. Since that photo ive stripped the engen bay, will be painting it tomorrow morning. Stripping the head as i type this. Project will be standing still till end of the month as im leaving on a business trip for 2weeks,urgh . Ps would it be possible for some nice admin to move this to the build section?

Im Very curious will this head fit onto a mini's block? If it would can be an easier way to sort out fuel injection

i think we're on the same page now. i know exactly what you mean, its been the reason we have done so many micra conversions so far too:

Little update since ive been away on business. Bought a rowland twin alu intake and twin 40weber dcoe carbs for the ridiculous price of R1200 or about 100pounds ,not a bad deal at all. Cam is also in to be reground to 276 degrees.the rest of the parts will be going in for machining end of the month, when the head comes back it will be sent off to be gasflowed and ported. had a little setback with the mags, the specific rim im looking for have been discontinued, bummer eh,now i need to search for a new desighn to go with the styling

http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd349/75MiniSunshine/27112009_004.jpg long story, had a little mix up with the cam and they ended up cutting it to a 288 degree cam instead of a 276

http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd349/75MiniSunshine/27112009_006.jpg all gaskets and timing kit bought, all i need now is to have the crank reground, buy big ends and mains. Have the block and head skimmed and chemicly dipped. The head is currently in being gasflowed and ported. If i can get the material i have a machinist that will make me a steel replica of my standard cast iron flywheel and then lighten it ,i will be happy with a 85 to 90kw,know a guy with similar spec,300 degree cam instead of my 288 making 112kw and almost 176nm/torq

http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd349/75MiniSunshine/28112009_002.jpgTook the the front suspension out saturday morning, bloody hell, 32degrees working outside in the sun as the mechanic was really busy and limited on space, going back later this week to start cutting the subframe fitting the dummy motor to it,once finished and back on the car the motor can just be dropped in and bolted down. P.S Sorry for posting each photo in a new reply but im using my phone and if i add all links in one reply none of the images show

Okay, so there was a slight change in plans, had a chat with somebody that sells turbo's in my area, and the kw per rand ratio is alot higher going the turbo route. So i went ahead and sold the cam, side draughts and intake, im converting to feul injection, got 4x 270cc injectors and a 70mm throttle body, got low cr exa turbo pistons, having the block 0 ringed to prevent blown head gaskets, slapping on a T28 turbo with a 280x300x75 fmic and a 2.5inch exhaust. The guy selling me the turbo has a turbo A14 running 188bhp@17psi boost which should be more than enough to play with.

Very small update just to let you know the build is still on, only experiencing a lack of funds but if all goes well that should be sorted by end of june and the build should be back on track.

Theres not really alot I can do at the moment, I traded my 10inch rims and tyres for a 8.4inch disc setup in very good condition, also experimenting with a booster to run with the brakes. I stripped the petrol tank out and gave it a good clean, its ready to have a bigger feed and return line welded in,I stripped the datsun dizzy and fitted the hall sensor and for point pick up,also laid my hands on 4 x 267cc uno turbo injectors,im looking at diff options to build a feul injection intake and plenum for the motor. Looked at the standard 1400 radiator and it seems i wont have enough space under the bonnet to run a proper size alu radiator, one option is to remove the front end and fit a clubman front with a mk1 golf rad, costwise this is the cheaper option but it requires more labour.

While the car was on the axle stands i took the chance to pop the new rims on to see what it looks like, I like it, nice and aggresive.

http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd349/75MiniSunshine/17052010_001.jpg

And this is how far it sits outside the body

http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd349/75MiniSunshine/17052010_002.jpg

Its not as wide as it looks ,I took the photo at a angle. It sits +- 15mm outside the body with roughly 20mm clearence between the rim and the shock.

Looking forward to get stuck back in this build once i start working again.

Spent the rest of the day at the doctor waiting to have a piece of clubman removed from my eye after grinding, guess thats payback on cindy's part.
Ive stripped the clubman nose completely and panel beated it a bit, more bits will be cut away tomorrow (while wearing safety goggles),making way for the radiator, fmic and oil cooler. The clubman front will then be primerd and set aside till the time comes to be united with the body
