Hello all, I am thinking about venturing into the murky world of 16 valve minis (after lusting from the ouside and cursing my A series on more than 1 occasion).
I am looking to do a K series conversion on a tightish budget (which knowing my budgetry skills will be blown apart  ) and I was wondering what the options on running a 1400 16v on carbs. I was thinking of fabrictaing a manifold to run a single Hiff 44 as its capable of supplying enough fuel/ air for a 120 BHP A series it should be fine for a stock K series?
Also, what wiring is required for the dizzy/ coil (do they require teh ecu)?
Thanks in advance
Craig

The 16v uses the ECU for ignition, with the dizzy doing no more than distribute the spark.
You could use an ignition only ECU.
I've heard rumours of people using the Rover Mems just for ignition.
Or a dizzy from one of the 8v models might be usable, but you would probably be breaking new ground.

Ah, I was hoping it would be like an elecy dizzy from a MG metro and just needed powering.
How dificult is it to 'blend' the 2 looms together (is it a nice seperate loom like teh vauxhal 1600 8v conversion)?

If you do a search you might find more info on the wiring.
Personally I have no experience of it as I just used the complete Metro loom 8)

some early 8v k-series used hif's
but personally i would stick with the standard injection, soon as you bin this you bin alot of the reliability you are obviously seeking, as well as fuel economy and power.
the loom is seperate, however you will find that alot of the later car's had an imobaliser and keyfob that is coded into the ecu, this causes the most headaches, i currently have the full engine loom, + the interior loom of the rover 400 that asociates to teh imobaliser and the dash, i chopped everythign else out and joined what was needed onto the mini loom. a very time consuming job, but not impossible.

I'm takeing a slightly different approach to wiring than most people on here, just to make things a bit more fun!
The standard wiring loom on my mini was useless, loads of faults with it, so I bought a MPI mini loom complete from a bloke on ebay, that way it already has the 5AS alarm part already in, really all I had to do was remove the mini engine loom, and re wire the connector on my rover 400 engine loom to mate with the mini's main loom. I have had to run a few more wires here and there (VSS, reverse lights) and it should all work hopefully (a bit more to do yet before I know for sure!)
The best advice I can give is to buy the rover RAVE workshop manual on CD, look on ebay, the wiring diagrams are SO much better and clearer than the haynes book of lies ones, and in colour, which is nice. :D

I put the full metro loom in my mini just a bit of conecting at the lights and wipers , you get a better loom. I even used the dash to make t easyer.

I've recently just fitted a full new loom in my clubby, hence I don't really want to chop it about/ replace it
Has anyboby managed to conect up to the stock 3 clock speedo (I have a cracking walnut dash that I dont want to change as well)
I thought that some of the early metrots had carbs. What is the power output on a 8v 1400 k series, there seems to be alot more of these available than the 16v

75ish bhp if memory serves.

What about using a early 214 engine wiring loom?
What is the difference in power between a MPI and a SPI? and couldI use a SPI loom on a MPI lump?

To be non technical, mpi metro has a bit more "poke" than the spi... looms as far as i remember are not interchangeable... run a search - i beleive it has been discussed before.
Isn't most of the engine output figures found online anyhow? Hold out for a Metro GTi with the MPi engine... best bang for you're buck with the K's (under 1400cc).

If you use a three clock dash from an injection mini, the tacho should work, and it can't be too hard to make the speedo work properly, it will probably require recalibration, but there are companies about that can do that easy enough, and make a special speedo cable if nessasary(search for speedy cables), but using any injection engine will require you to chop the loom about, although you could probably make a supplimentary loom, and leave the standard one as it is. it complicates matters though.
I would have thought that wiring in one of the 8 valve carb engines would really be no harder than doing a MG metro one though, and now those in charge have changed the rules, you can still join the club :D
