Hi - James here - and when I say 'soon' I'm sure you all understand exactly what I mean ... ;)
OK - got the mini, got the donor car with V6, just started the welding course at the college ...
I've decided to use an auto 'boxed V6 for a number of reasons; less hassle with linkage being the main one (no linkage, no cables, no clutches to fail) and depending on the size of the final wheels and tyre combination, the gearing could also end up somewhat strange so I thought an auto 'box with it's slippy slippy torque convertor would make that less of an issue.
My initial ideas are to incorporate as much of the Cav mounting system and suspension as possible - going for the idea of effectively getting the front end of the V6 (suitably modded) transplanted into the rear of the Mini.
My initial concerns off the bat are; track ... but I've seen enough on the forum on the subject of driveshafts to be getting on with.
GENERAL PLAN:
i)Strip Cav, remove donor engine and bits ready.
ii)Suitably set up the garage ready for the project - coating the dusty cement floor, building a man-enough workbench, install cross beam and a pulley chain system.
iii)Strip the Mini to it's shell.
iv)Rig up a spit roast for the shell (aka 'jevs')
v)Go to town on the 'bad' panels and necessary repair work.
vi)Measure up and plan the installation in detail.
vii)Cut the Mini shell open, insert motor and basic subframe bits.
viii)Detailed measurements for subbie, engine, cage.
ix)Fabricate
x)Fit
xi)Sort all the usual running niggles.
xii)Deseam the shell.
xiii)Start spending some time and money getting into some kind of show presentable condition.
So, as of the date of this post, I'm stripping the donor Cavalier to try and get some cash back.
