Hi guys. Ive not found any info on this yet so i thought i'd ask on here.

1.- When converting the engine over to the BMW head, do you need the
original mini cam in the engine as obviously your now running twin
cam, aslo do you need the chain drive? As i could sell mine if i dont
need them.

2.- If i run an electric water pump can i get rid of the original water pump
and block it off? Ive not found the web site for the manual yet i cant
remember it.

I only ask as im not hot on this stuff yet. i can do electrics but im still learning engines.

will still need a cam or a dummy cam as it will still be needed to run the oil pump (and in most cases the dizzy) and you cant just block the water pump off as you will need to make up some sort of outlet pipe for the leccy pump

This answer maybe a little late but no you dont need the chain drive as you will be running a dry cam belt set up and the cam belt will turn the original dummy camshaft and oil pump. as for the water pump you will need to fit a outlet pipe where the water pump usualy fits.

It`s very old now (quite a few years actually) & the design is quite the same these days either, but it should give you a pretty good idea of how to do the conversion

hope that helps

digging up an old thread here but see if ive understood this correct....

this setup will still turn the original mini camshaft? would just need to rig another pully up for the alternator?

You take any old Mini camshaft and turn down the lobes to make it into a jackshaft purely there to drive the oil pump.

As for the alternator - I use the std Mini one with the std pully. How you drive this is going to depend on your method of conversion. You can also look at smaller Nipon Denso alternators.

Yo could mooch round Turbominis for ages looking for associated information but I would suggest you look here...

Most of us with the bike head conversion in the UK, use this resource as our sounding board and there's loads of very useful ideas/information there...

Yes a lot of peeps have used the BMW K series head on BMC/BL A series engine.

Motobins (BMW) Motorcycle www.motobins.co.uk sell used heads & other parts.

Specialist Components sell a conversion guide book www.specialist-components.co.uk 01508 491762 for about £20 which is re-imbursed if you buy a conversion kit from them.

It may be better to base the conversion on an A+ block.

Morspeed also sell a similar conversion kit www.mspd-engines.co.uk.

The above conversions aren't as straight-forward as they appear, it takes a lot of faffing about adapting the block etc to suit the BMW head.

KAD sell twincam heads which more or less just bolt straight on, but they're not cheap www.kad-uk.com

Laurence pretty much sums it up...

But there a forum pretty much dedicated to the BMW head conversions:

If it ain't on there, it ain't worth knowing...
