Very nice looking. Do you have to do any modifications to the body?

Thx for the comments :D .

Do you have to do any modifications to the body?

I have had to cut a strip off of the bottom of the drivers side inner wing and alter the box section on the bulkhead to gain clearence for the inlet manifold.

I will put all my pics in the gallery on sunday night :)

Hi,

Yes it is nice and simple design.
I wish I could done that myself.
I think I tried too hard to accomdate too many ideas.

Where are you going to mount the alternator?
I will be inetrested with that.

nice work
I was also wondering bout the alternator, how have u mounted it all up?
looks like its mounted on the frame?
mine sits in the tower on the frame and its not the ultimate way, when adjusting tension, and changing it means the inletmanifoild has to come out.

Hi.
The car has taken a back seat for a while whilst we replaced the floors in my 1275GT  .

Only really got the interior to put in and a small amount of wiring.

Here is a video of it when we got it out to re-bleed the brakes. The fuel pump siezed shortly afterwards

Smurfy,Thanks for the great photos. They are a big help to me for seting up my frame. This is my first time posting on the site.I hope you guys can help me.I have my engine in the subframe and am trying to center it.I don't think I have it over enough.I cant line up the shifter rod without putting a bend in it.Does the rod have to stay straight to work without binding. Can someone out there give me a measurement from the center of the lower control arm bolt to the face of the seal on the side if the diff. cover on the left side.
Thanks for your help,Jack

Hi,

Can you not fit potty joint and innershaft(D/S) to determind where about engine should be?
I have done this way and my engine is in more or less in the middle so that I can use 295mmdrive shaft for both side.
Also, gearshift shaft does not line up straight.
They do get bit diagonal even in Swift.
If you must, you can buy gearshift UJ from Merlin, DT and so on.
I might have some pic in my galler for Uj I'm talking about.

My engine sits to the right (If looking at the car from the front)

Exhaust header is centered in the tunnel

The right driveshaft is shorter maybe -5cm or so

I will try out using just one linkage "arm", i don´t think the engine will move about that much anyway. Anyone tried that?

Thanks for the fast replys. The problem I am having is the subframe I am starting out with is for a Honda vtec. The frame is made very well and I would like to use it.I have the engine all the way to the right side of the car to the point where the timing belt is close to the frame tube and can not go any more to that side. The only thing stopping it from working out is the diff. is close to the subframe in the lower back and The shifter looks like it should be closer to the center of the tunnel. If I cut the frame to make the diff. clear and the motor is still to far to the right to work it will make it hard for me to resell the frame for someone with a vtec.Everything looks like it will work but I'm at the point of no return once its cut.Too many hours and beers to make the cut last night. If anyone has a clear photo from above the engine or can give me a point on the engine and one on the bulkhead to line up that would be a great help.
Thanks Jack

Hello Guy's,Sorry to be a pain in the ass.I have the motor as far to the right side of the car as I can.The exhaust cam gear is touching the inner fender panel.Did you guys have to cut out the panel to get the motor over more.Looking at Smurfs photos the rear shot show that you did not cut any of the frame to get the diff. housing back so the CV joint lines up in the opening.I cut the tab off from the back of the diff. housing as It was not doing anything on the swift.Am I right on this or is the photo misleading.I have the motor at 15% tilt.
Thanks for all the help,Jack

Hi Jack,

I think you will need to have cambelt cover about 5mm from the left wing (fender)....if you look the engine bay from front of the car.

Also, if you look carefully, you will see many of us has modified subframe so that diff hosung can be cleared.

I tried to fit my engine 15 degrees tilt myself but I opted to 5 in the end for my R1 carb mod.
I think keeping it std angle will hit front panel.
I think your exhust manifold (header) will hit....

Which mk of a engine/gearbox setup, are you using?
mk2 will be bit wider than mk1..

Good luck

Hello, Marcus and Atchi,Thanks for your help.I have the trans out of a 93 with the front mount.I cut the subframe by the Diff. housing and now the CV is in just the right spot and the housing just clears the rack.I think I just had to get the balls up to start cutting the frame. The only thing I still see as a small problem is that the shift rod looks like it will hit the side if the tunnel.I may be able to move the motor to the left a little more tomorrow.I'll keep you posted.
Thanks Jack

Hi I have been away so haven't been able to reply.
Here are a few pics of my gear linkage. As you can see it has had to be bent slightly and it works fine :D . It did fit in straight but we were unable to put the car into reverse so had to bend it.

Hi,
Could someone measure from the center of the mini to the engine/transmission parting line?
It looks like 1.5 inches to 2 inches.
I'm putting a 3 cylinder in my mini, but I want to leve room for a 4 cylinder.

Hi nice car can you tell me about the drive shafts are they just metro moded on a lathe or are they cut and welded before the lathe mod :?:

Smurfy
31-10-2006, 07:33 PM
I can't help much as my dad did them whilst I was away. They are just modded metro ones(no cutting and welding).

I THINK he cut the splines using a dremel clamped in the tool post on the lathe.

I shall phone him later and get more info...possibly some pics.

Hi. Well I spoke to him last night on the phone. He said that he cut the metro shafts down to length and then machined them.
He tried to use the tools on the lathe but as the shafts are hardened nothing would touch them. In the end he clamped a dremmel in the tool post and used really thin cutting disks.

He made a dial gauge to ensure he cut the splines in the correct place. It took him a whole day to cut the two shafts but they fit first time :D

I know it is a bit vauge. I will get more details if you need them :)

Hi,

Nice one, mate.
What exhaust did you use?
Is it Std cast iron manifold with RC40?
How does it feel compare to A-series engined Mini?
Also, it is std mk2 Gti setup(106Bhp @ flywheel), right!?

Is it more economical than 1275 you have?
I can only get 36mpg with my mk1 Gti and I hope I can get same.
Since it will be everyday car as soon as I finish.... :P .

Let us know how you think it goes compares to your Mini!

I will have another go at uploading the high res video to my website in the week sometime (I couldn't get it to work earlier).

The exhaust is the std cast iron manifold fitted to a 2" single box system from Huddersfield minispares.

Handling wise it still feels like a mini (with bigger wheels) but the engine is completely different to an A-series. The throttle response and acceleration is superb. The car is really nice to drive, I just need to get used to putting the power down in low gears.

It is a std mk2 setup apart from a performance air filter and the exhaust.

I would say it is definitely more economical than my GT but haven't driven it enough to find out exactly how much better.

I would love to drive it everyday but I wouldn't like to leave it out on the street where I am at uni at the moment, I'm not so keen leaving my GT out.

Read this thread the other day and was very impressed especially the amount of it done by you and especially your dad didnt have time to reply unfortunately

But this morning my new MiniWorld mag came through the post and was flicking through from the back and saw a suzuki twin cam mini and thought "that looks damn nice but i recognise it from somewhere" :? i realised after a bit of reading that it was yours

i closed the mag and realised that you had not only got a feature but you also got Front cover :D  so well done its nice to see a proper home grown project without a stupid budget get on the cover and especialy one where i have got to see the build pictures, so congratualtions 8)

one final thing which i havent yet seen in the feature (could have missed it) but what price do you pay for insurance? and what millage limit and value etc? and last of all what company? just i noticed your the same age as me and roughly same power conversion

They were supposed to be sending me a few copies early, before it came out, but I haven't received them yet. I didn't even know it was on the cover

I have insured it through Miniworld (I think). I'm paying around £750 for 5,000 miles per year and an agreed valuation of £7k. I'm not 100% sure all that is correct but I'll dig out my policy tomorrow to check. It was the cheapest quote I had by about £1000 as not many other insurers would take into account the fact that I had a daily driver aswell.

yeah it actually looks very very impressive on the cover and the slogan "built on a backyard budget" will get many peoples interest, the feature is a nice job, overall it definately shows the car to its best

what makes your car totally individual in my eyes is that nearly every proper 16v conversion i have seen hasnt had a bodykit its just been a 'useable' drivers car so to speak but yours has the show car looks and then a nice reliable power lump up front to back up the looks which is a rareity

insurance seems damn good im ringing HIC (MiniWorld insurance)tommorrow for a quote on my conversion i was guessing it would be around £2k but im hoping it will be less after seeing yours but i can only hope

Don't let it drop out of the turbo boost range

You can easily find a turbo that will work between 3000-8500 on a g13b.

Superchargers take up to much room and soak to much power from the engine. Recycle your waste gases.... Fit a turbo :D

On the front cover of the MiniWorld with your car on, it has "built on a back yard budget" written at the bottom left corner. is that referring to your car? I dont recall any mention of that in the write-up. but then again i've only read it once, and that was the day the mag came out  I'm gonna have another skim through now.

Love the car though! awesome that its gets used properly too

Smurfy
16-08-2007, 07:09 PM
Yeah, the comment on the cover was referring to my car

Quite a few people had problems with brakes overheating and seizing during the day, but mine were fine and worked really well, even with 2 harsh braking zones.
I half expected the engine temp to shoot up as it was a scorching day but it was spot on all day :D .

The only thing that I would say let it down really was how the suspension was set up. It was far too high and soft, but that is down to me using it to drive to work every day the the moment, and my lack of talent behind the wheel :P.

I still don't have the times yet (hoping to get them tonight) but I reckon I will have done OK in my class.

I have decided that the car is going to undergo a few changes, in preparation for the sprint/hillclimbing season next year :D .

My main aim is to loose some weight out of the car so alot of the interior will be coming out, and I will probably make a new dash as I will have no need for speakers etc.

Tonight, I have just bought an OMP rollcage off eBay and was just outbid on a carbon fibre seat.

I will post pics and updates as I progress.

If you are referring to what I think you are, then it would be a bigger PITA to remove than it was to fit

Engine mods might be on the cards but it depends on how much it is all going to cost (I'm working at the moment, on my placement year, but then I have to go back and finish my degree for another year or 2 so really I should try and save a bit of money).
I've been reading up on basic DIY porting but I don't know if I will do it myself yet, and might have a look into a set of cams.

Smurfy,

how does the pedal feel ?

I measured the pivot lengths (pivot point to cable pin) and the mini one was quite a bit shorter than the Swift one...

I was planning on extending the pivot point, but if it's not needed, then thats one less job to do :)

Just wondered if it made the clutch a bit quick (if you know what I mean)

The belt on the left was the first one we tried, from a local motorfactors but the alternator was too close to the front panel.
The one on the right was from Motorsave and is 3mm shorter than the 1st one we tried (as you can see from the part number).

Spyda:

I haven't had any problems with the clutch. It is very smooth and doesn't bite faster than anything else I have driven. I've driven in heavy traffic quite a bit in it and you can slip the clutch easily. It all works fine.

Hope that helps.

Ok, I'm not in a rush :D .

You are probably best measuring round the pulleys with some string to find out roughly what length belt you need. They seem to be available in sizes going up in approx 5mm.

spNOam
06-10-2007, 08:36 PM
Hi guys, nice to meet you at Castle Combe (or on the way to!) The shorter the distance between the pivot and cable 'hook' the less effort needed on the pedal therefore giving you more control?

ed4ran
06-10-2007, 10:32 PM
Yes control, but a lot of movement as well (obviously depends on the lengths involved). Id say try it as it is (standard lengths) and if you don't like it, then play with the lengths.

I have posted some of this in the 16v sprint section but I thought I would keep this thread updated.

I have made a start on getting my car ready for the hill climb season. Progress is a little slow as I dont get much time to work on it. Anyway...

I have removed the comfy rover seats which weighed 23Kg each! They will be replaced with this which weighs roughly 7Kg:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/2008_0102Mini0060.jpg

This is my new rollcage. Its an FIA approved, Fe45 steel, OMP cage with removable doorbars and rear diagonal.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/2008_0102Mini0056.jpg

Unfortunately, that was as far as I got at the weekend.

Things to do include:
Welding in the floor plates for the rollcage
Bolt in the rollcage
Mount the seat properly
Mount the harness
Loose some weight from the car (remove stereo etc)...

Smurfy
28-02-2008, 04:06 PM
I trial fitted the rollcage in the car at the weekend. Unfortunately my dash JUST doesn't fit so I think I will probably have to make a new one (I'm thinking of making something similar to the curley ones). My old dash MIGHT be up for sale at some point if anyone is interested.

Still a fair bit to get done yet, but I made a little more progress this weekend...

As mentioned earlier, my old dash doesn't fit with the rollcage. I couldn't bring myself to cut it up to modify it so I have decided to make a new one. I would love a curley carbon dash but I cant afford one :(.

I mocked up the basic shape using card and string:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/DSCF2123.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/DSCF2125.jpg

then used that to make frame:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/DSCF2130.jpg

Which I then skinned using a sheet of laminate my dad had in the garage:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/DSCF2132.jpg

And fibreglassed:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/DSCF2137.jpg

After it had dried I removed the frame etc from the inside so that I could mount the dials:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/DSCF2143.jpg

Test fit:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/DSCF2150.jpg

Then made a frame round the clocks and fibreglassed it:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/DSCF2152.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/DSCF2153.jpg

Thats as far as I have got with the dash.

My dad has started making my seat brackets:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/DSCF2139.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Hillclimb%20Prep/DSCF2127.jpg

And finally, I have started to add some stickers, as per the sprint rules :P

Smurfy
14-04-2008, 04:07 PM
I had 3 full days on it this weekend so made a bit more progress. Not many pics this time tho.

My dad finished welding the floor plates last week so I was able to remove the rest of the insulation and paint the floor. Put the cage back in for the final time. Painted the seat mounts but need to buy some more bolts as we ran out. Painted and fitted the rear harness bar and the rest of the harness mounts.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/2008_0413mini0008.jpg

Got a little further with the drivers side pod for the dash. The passengers side will be a removable flat panel to make it easy to access the wiring and ecu.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/2008_0413mini0009.jpg

Progress was much slower than I had hoped last week. Partly due to the weather and also because my arch STILL hasn't arrived from Autofashion!!! I have been promised it (again) by the end of this week.

I have got the rear bumper back into shape now, It just needs another layer or 2 of fiberglass to strengthen it a bit more. We have also re-skinned the drivers door (I stripped the old one and prepped it and my dad has welded it up for me :D )

My whelarch finally arrived the otherday so I can crack on and get the car finished :D . I am moving some of my stuff into my new (uni) house next week tho so I wont get much done until after that.

BUT:
I have to say my recent experiences with Autofashion have not been good. It has taken 6 weeks for the arch to arrive after I was promised it within 10 days. I was then promised it on 2 other occasions where it did not arrive :? When it finally did arrive it certinley wasnt worth the £80!!! that they charged. I was expecting a bit of work but this is a bit excessisve based on what I have paid. The finish is quite poor and requires a fair bit of filling and sanding to make it right. I have emailed Autofashion and they refuse to admit that there is anything wrong. They say
it is far and away the best product on the market regardless of cost.

No excuses were made in respect of delivery, as none were needed, and you were kept fully informed of progress. The item arrived by your own admission some 10 weeks before the time advised on the website.
BUT nearly 5 weeks later than it was promised when ordering :( .

However, they will also allow me to send the arch back to be finished propperly and it will be returned along with an invoice for the additional work!!
I will post some pictures tomorrow (I did just take some but my parents computer corrupted the memory card)

I will have a bit more free time again now as I have finished moving house :D.

But, I am now even more annoyed about the wheelarch. I put it up against the car today as I need to repair the kit on the drivers sill. Things didn't line up very well. I walked round to the otherside of the car to compare the arches and the new one is 35-40mm shorter than it should be and the side repeater recess is in the wrong place. I am going to have to cut it up and fibreglass it back together to make it fit

I've made a bit of progress on the bodywork today (pics to follow in the week).

I also had a trip to the local scrapyard and picked this lot up for £60 :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Turbo%20Setup/DSCF2407.jpg

Its a Garrett T25 from a rover 220. I also got the tubular manifold from a k-series rover to cut up but I am not sure if we are using it now. The port spacings are similar to the swift so it would be fairly easy to make a new flange and get it to fit. The pic below is the k-series manifold with a Suzuki gasket:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Turbo%20Setup/DSCF2405.jpg

The intercooler looks like it will fit either in the front bumper, behind the grille or on top of the engine (but I guess it wont be as efficient there unless I had a bonnet vent, which I don't really want)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/Turbo%20Setup/DSCF2409.jpg

It is going to be a tight fit as I want to keep it all within the std front but it looks possible.....hopefully.

The plan is to get it done over the winter ready for next years hillclimb season.

Hi Phil,

You must be Gynaecoloist(this is a big word for me...lol) to fit them in Mini with round nose.

So, if I get exhaust flange and may be able to mod to fit G13B....
That's a good find!

The experience with suppliers doesn't really surprise me to be honest, i have heard numerous bad reports of the magic kits fitment which when paying the best part of £400 is beyond a joke

i have recently had a really bad experience with Rimstyle uk, an aftermarket car parts supplier, i got some top of the range coilvers for the 180 from them (rather than buy the cheap ones) and when fitted they sat 10mm too low and nearly smashed my Cv joints to pieces but they wont accept any responsibility for it nor advice so i have had to higher the bodies up by 10mm and clamp the bolts as tight as possible

the turbo conversion should be good and it interests me especailly as its what i plan to do with my 1.4 16v in standard round nose when the engines in there :D

Hi.

Your not far off with the name, it's Phil

Its running and drivable again, but not finished. I took it to the Teeside sprint at the end of last years season which highlighted a few things that need to be sorted.

Unfortunately, since then it has sat in my dads garage and hasn't really moved. I've been too busy with my final year at uni to get home and work on it. My last exam is next Wednesday and I start my new job next month so once I have sorted a house out I will have some time to work on it again :D

I'm hoping to re-spray it and get the turbo on this summer. But I think the first job will be to set the suspension up properly again.

Got back from the Nurburgring last night. Just over 1,300 mile round trip and it never missed a beat.

I only did 3 laps on the ring as I didn't want to push my luck....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/psmurfy/Suzuki%20Frame/miniring2.jpg

I had 1 passenger lap in a heavily modified 205GTI, the driver knew the ring like the back of his hand, it was awesome.

I saw Sabine drifting the ring taxi and also Ring mini doing a few laps.

The new Nurburgring resort is excellent, and many of it is free which was a bonus.

Dragging this back up from the bottom.... its nearly 18 months since I last updated this.

It has bee gathering dust in the corner of the garage over winter so I decided it was about time I put it back on the road.

As the new racer is nearly finished, I decided to convert this one back into a more useable/comfortable road car (it will probably get the odd run around Barkston). So I have removed the cage, dash, bucket seat, harnesses, harnesss bar etc. Refitted my old dash, stereo, rover seats, rear seat and now the interior looks like this again:
