View Full Version : What brakes?

When I finally start building my Vtec Mini, I think I'll be using 12" steel Wellers. Only reasons are S calipers costs too much (even tho I just sold 2 sets in the summer!?) for 10's, and 13's do take a bit away from the handling, well from my expereince.

This now leads to my questions - What brakes should I use? I waiting for the AMT frame, which uses Mini hubs. Would the standard 2 pot calipers be up to the job? Or should I try and find some 4 pots?

Vented brakes would be best option, and tryin to run it on 12's or 10's is gonna mean a lot less grip  but would be fun to say the least. A guy with a 2.0 vaux from Aberdeen( You lot probs all seen it, the one costed £23+K to build, with the Irn Bru can under the hood) he was gonna try and run it on 10's

B20GT - Yeah I think I have seen that Mini, think it was at the Scottish Mini Weekend at Perth? Along with the red Type R powered Mini with rear Brava lights (the guy is from Ayr). The red Mini was actually in Mini World's Keeping Your Mini Alive 4. To be honest I didn't see where the 23k+ went on the Vauxhall one, unless he went over the top on everything?

Anyhow B20GT where are you from in Scotland? I'm from Ayrshire.

Yeah I did think about grip issues with 12's, but I haven't found a Mini with 13's that I liked the feel of yet... also I dont like the look of them!

I thought someone was running a vtec\vauxhall on 12's in this forum? Also a lot of the earlier Vauxhall conversions used 12's and 10's from what i can remember (going by pics only...).

Cheers for the input lads. Still have plenty of time to gather the wee important bits, so just trying to figure out what to look for.

I don't know if this is what you want to know about but it is an interesting topic about converting to Honda brakes on a Mini.

No exactly what I was looking for, but it did make for very interesting reading. I guess if I want to make a Mini on 10's that would be the cheapest option rather than trying to find a decent set of S calipers for reasonable money.

Seems like that mod is comparable to the S caliper set up, and as far as I know the standard calipers for later Minis with 12" wheels were just as good if not better? Hmmm might need to find some 4 pots! Gah time to search Ebay...

Cheers guys

i converted my minivan from drums to 4pots with 10inch wheels. i got a set of machined down 4pots with 7.5vented discs, hubs and cv for about £200.

they would be your best option for 10s but good luck getting grip. i remember reading about a KAD 16v mini with 10s that had pulled the tyres off of the rim!

Oh I'm not mad enough (yet) to run a Vtec on 10's!?! I want to run them on 12's. So you all recon I should find some 4 pots to use? I think the AMT kit will use standard Mini hubs and so on. Maybe I should pester AMT one last time... hehehe

Cheers

I am running my car on 12 inch rims, and using the stock 8.4" Discs. Braking is excellent, no problems. All braking stuff was new including the rears, adjustable poportioning valve used to set the front/rear bias. Silicone fluid used, stock dual master used. I have no complaints re braking.

What about traction with 12" wheels. As i am going to use 12" wheels and am worried about lack of grip!!

With the tires I have you can spin the wheels, but I am running Falken tires, which are more for street than track. With a good set of Yokohamas I don't think traction would be much of an issue.
