Does anyone here have access to a mazda K type 6 cylinder? Thats like the ones in the MX3. I am interested to know what size it is roughly. In particular the length of the cylinder head + timing cover. My GTM kit car is limited more by the inner wings than by the bulkhead.
I thought mazda since they are easy to get and supposed to be relatively small but does anyone know of a shorter block 6?

So after searching the internet I now know stuff.
For instance it is all aluminium, and the KL-DE 2.5L fitted to the later ford probe/MX6 was the exact same external size as the 1.8 fitted to the MX3. I just don't know what size that happens to be. Similarly lots of reference to its amazingly compact size with no mention of how compact that is. :pissedoff:
125kg without gearbox, sounds OK to me for a V6 with 170hp in standard form and 200hp in Japanese trim.
Anyone with a tape measure and an appropriate Ford/Mazda?

I just happen to have an 93 MX3. Here are some measurements. I hope they are what you need. If not email me and I will take some pictures with a tape measure on it for you.
Front timing cover to end of distributor=54 mm
Front valve cover only 38 mm wide by 23 mm deep
Rough from rear of IM on rear bank to the front bank=65 mm
Frame rail to frame rail=92 mm I didn't check if the tranny is within that or goes beyond as it's getting dark outside.
I like the handling of the car but the gearing in the transmission is very low. It always seems you should be in a taller gear for the speed you are driving. The 1.8 V6 isn't quite as powerful as I expected and is a bit of a gas guzzler. Only 25 MPG city driving. I'm not sure what a GTM is but in a lighter car it would pull nicely.
Here are some specs for this engine. A far cry from the 170 HP you quote but I believe you said that was the MX6. JS
The mx-3 came available with two engine options - a 1.6 L Inline 4, or a 1.8 L V6. The 4 cylinder was available in two versions: 88 hp SOHC or 106 hp DOHC 16 valve. The more capable DOHC 24 valve V6 produced 127 hp and was also available as an automatic.

Thank you Strudel,
A GTM Rossa is a plastic Kit car using mini running gear, with the engine in the back.

I have 600 mm across the narrowest point of the engine bay and that is at the top. Am I right in thinking that the length (width across the engine bay) is therefore 540mm.

I would really want to limit how much plastic I cut away, but if I can get a real tidy gearbox with that, it looks almost possible. I will now have to find a real one to study. :kseries:

First off I apologize as it was late and I did the measurements in a bit of a rush. They should be in CM not MM.
I am not sure how to answer your question about having 600 mm across the engine bay. As I stated the distance between the frame rails is 920 mm. That is the width that the engine/tranny sit in the engine bay. If you wish to centre the complete unit that is the space you will need. The 540 mm is from the timing cover to the outer edge of the dizzy. I believe the pulleys for the alternator and AC if you keep it are beyond that a bit. Then the tranny sticks out beyond that but at a lower level.
If you stay with the complete intake system which includes the airbox/filter area then you will need the complete 920 mm. I will take some pictures for you today with some measurements. If I can email them to you I will else I will post it on the site for you to look at. JS

Its quite difficult to explain the shape I have available since it is sculpted around the existing engine. The 600mm I mentioned is at cylinder head height. everywhere else I have 800mm. When we get to gearbox level the plastic tapers out and we have mini subframe, so I could afford to cut away some space. But if I need more than 800mm just to clear the pulleys then its a non starter for me. I can do without AC (currenty 13 degrees C here in sunny Caithness) and the airbox can be changed but if I am going to put even 130hp in a plastic monocoque I had better leave some strength. :)
If you manage some pics I will be extremely grateful, but you've already given me plenty to get started with. Thanks again.

Have a look here www.mx6.com i'm sure there are some photos of engine bays....
I used to have an MX6, and the 2.5 v6 is a touch underpowered in the MX6 with 160 bhp, but very smooth. It's not a particularly 'small' engine though, fills the large engine bay ont he mx6 quite well!

Hi, sorry for not getting back to you. I've been away.
No I only got the first ones, which were very useful to me.
However, The more I look at the car, the more I am going off the idea. It could fit, but I would be left with a car that isn't one thing or the other. Not a mini and still not a lotus. So I am going to concentrate on getting my Cooper back on the road first and consider engines swaps later.
Thanks for your help.
