View Full Version : VTR or VTS Engines?

I've been thinking about different engines that would fit into the engine bay and i wondered if any knows if a 1.6 saxo engine would fit into the engine bay (extended front isnt a problem)

i was looking at the VTR and the VTS engines (i know the VTS will be bigger being 16v).

Any ideas if one will fit, and if anyone has attempted to fit one into a mini?

both engines have the problem that they sit bolt upright, and have a very deep inlet manifold, they'll fit but you wil need to move your mastercylinders and possibly a bulkhead box, from the simple measurements i took when i was deciding on an engine to use. the VTS/106GTi engien is a cracker though, worth looking into further. dont know of anyone having used these engiens though.

thanks for the info evolution, when you say the master cylinders would need to be moved, would they fit anywhere in the enginebay, or could they go somewhere else?

Also, is it a case of an extended front?

Thanks
Mike

You could get\fabricate a pedalbox that houses the cylinders inside the car and have them connected to remote reservoirs (could be housed inside the car too?).

you could relocate the brake servo/cylinder as bob has done with a twin pedal box, and obviously, use the saxo cable clutch. the measurements i took were very basic mind, i used the driveshafts as a set point and noted how the rest of the engine sat in comparison. there may be plenty of room, like i say my measurements were stetchy. but with a std vts engiene and 2 headgaskets you can see over 200bhp(160+atw) with some boost, reliably. there defo worth looking into!

You're talking about possible space problems evo and you're recommending forced induction too add to the problem?! :D I like it!

Are you talking about supercharging or turbo'ing? Just curious - didn't realise these engines that reside in chav\ned mobiles are that tough on standard internals  :)

thanks for the info guys, im getting quite into the idea now.

I really need to find a decent complete engine before i can go any further, but 1st i will definately take some accurate measurements, just to make sure everything fits in.

Oh, and evolution, what is the need for 2 headgaskets, sorry, just curious?

Thanks
Mike

2 head gaskets is a cheap way of reducing the compression ratio

someone on the saxo sport club did an alu-weld job on the block(or was it the head?) to help lower the compression. never did find out if it worked or cooked.

Lol, is it really that much trouble to machine the tops of the pistons, or if you're too lazy to strip the engine then just open the combustion chambers a couple of CC?

Well it is a lot of trouble when you consider you could simply stick two headgaskets on  But I've read a few horror stories as a result of doing that on other engines...

have you looked into this any more or made any progress on putting a vts lump into a mini?

i went to look at a crashed vts yesterday, and im checking out a mini today...i'll keep you posted!

never heard of a single TU have head gasket failure when running multiple MLS gaskets. yeah its a bodge, but its been proven to work on alot of bosted saxo's and 106's.

they guy that welded his head to lower CR crashed the car only a few weeks after doing the turbo conversion. Sold the lot on but never heard anything from the new owner of the bits.

so its been done before then, thats all i wanted to hear! :D

despite the chav image of saxo's theres a decent knowlegebase on there. and plenty of people who know what they know from experience rather than hearsay :)

AFAIK a TU has NEVER been put in a mini...

first time for everything i suppose!

yea i'm driving a vts( ) at the moment and have built two others so i am fairly familier with the TU engine!

suppose all we can do is try, ill have to look into it in much more detail though!

If it doesn't fit in the front why not mid mount it... and turbo\supercharge it... :D

its another option we'l have to check out, would be fairly expensive to charge it though, reckon it'l be n/a for the moment anyways!

ive got tu engine in my roundnose mini but its a 1360cc ax gt,all alloy jobbie, i think the 1600cc versions have a cast iron block? not much space between carb and clutch mastercylinder [i had to put a dent in it for clearance!] dont know about injection on vtr probably bigger, but would still fit with a bit of lateral thinking and a hammer. ax gt engine verry torquey and revs lik a mad thing also comes with close ratio 5 speed gearbox. who needs 150 bhp ! ax does 0 to 60 in 9 sec and 110 mph mini is lighter and smaller wheels so should accelerate even quicker [in theory] but not as aerodynamic so lower top speed. how fast do you want to go in a mini! or is that a stupid question to ask you guys?
