View Full Version : Allspeed rear wheel drive conversion

01-11-2005, 03:24 PM
Hi guys.. new to the forum and contemplating a mini project, have read quite a bit about the rs conversion and vtecs but spotted this at the Allspeed site....

"Front engined rear wheel drive conversions available from a 180bhp road rocket to an all out 260 bhp rally projectile. Basic spec : Vauxhall 2.0l 16v xe running thru a Cosworth T5 gearbox "

Does anyone on here have this conversion or is there someone who could tell me a bit more?....cheers!

If you search around you will find a bit of stuff about it, but you are probably best off ringing Rob and talking to him direct

Soz, i did know Rob was the Allspeed person to chat to after browsing these pages the last few days.
I just thought i would ask on here for a brief description of whats involved rather than take up Robs time by ringing.. maybe if Rob sees this then ill get a better idea ...and at least the reply will be when hes good 'n' ready... theres no great rush at mo as im sourcing a mini, just looking at options ..cheers!.

It's quite a indepth conversion is it not? Need to sort bulkhead, tunnel and the back of the car (and more no doubt). But if, going by Rob's figures of his car, you get a good XE (suppose a YB too...) you'll have a right fast bugger of a Mini. Think Rob had his car close to 150mph IIRC

Hmmm wonder if the bits for the rear for diff, suspension and that, sorta come as a unit? As in if you can't afford £10k, maybe he'll sell you bits so you could cobble one together yourelf if you have the skills? As said, best to speak to Rob on the phone. Perhaps 10k sounds a lot, but I doubt Rob want's to be giving away his secrets to his setup cheaply... I know I wouldn't! Anyways as said, it's quite a lot of work I'd imagine - top notch restores can cost that.

For the amount of work involved in fabrication on a project like that I think £ 10k would be a reasonable price. Remember that Watsons charge in the region of £ 7.5k and all they do is chop the front off and bolt a subframe in (a little more but you get the idea).

One off custom minis are very expensive to make(I should know)

Ahh,, memories :) thats a pic from the 1st time i drove her.
The engines down at JRE for surgery atm, cant wait to see how much power John can get from it, i think the limiting factor might be the wet sump, i just didnt want to go dry sump really.
Ive also managed to find a 4.7 cwp for the 7 in diff, so will be loosing some of that too fast top end, should liven the accel up a bit hopefully.

More acceleration Rob!? You crazy BASTARD! What I would give for just a passenger ride in your car...

Din't realise Watsons charge that much to make you a VTEC Mini!?! Please don't tell me that's not even tidied up a bit... and just bolted together... Hell when you put it like that, Rob's 10k is a bargain.

And who would be driving this Cossie 4x4 Mini eh Darren if it was possible :D Mind you didn't a guy build one using the 2.9 Cossie engine? Funny looking black thing with huge flares and so on.

Hey 10k+vat still sounds like a bargain if you had the bits Rob needs laying about in your garage and a large (like really large) wedge of cash in your back pcket (man couldnt sit with that in there).

Yeah, I thought you meant the "real" cossie engine  Just being pedantic.

Who has these bits really? Not many Mini people anyhow :(

What would be cheaper to use and mod for big power, XE, LET or YB? Seeing as all 3 are good in their own ways. Hehe sorry to hijack the thread
