View Full Version : vauxhall 1.6 8v using mini subframe

anyone done the above? i cant really afford to spend the near on £500 for a subframe so i was considering using a mini one and modifying it, cutting and welding is no problem. I had the idea of getting the driveshafts made up first, cut and weld a 1275 mini to a vaux one, after bribing the lengths off someone on here ;) then using that to help position the engine in place, and once hanging in place make mounts around it and strengthn everything up. Hows this sound to you guys that have done the conversion?
Anyone got any pictures of a modified mini frame?

Cheers
Eddy

From someone who had already started making a frame (and had a welder, access to all manner of steel, grinders, etc); once I saw an allspeed frame, I down'd tools and opened the chequebook!

It all bolted together pretty easilly aswell. It was a struggle, but i even got it in a roundnose without removing the bonnet slam panel!

ive got a clubman so plenty of room, ive seen pictures off the allspeed frames and it is tempting, but its a big wedge of cash i dont have, so trying to do my own is very tempting, ive also got all the kit grinders welders etc...... so none of that is a problem.

If you've got the nouse, then crack on. It's pretty easy to make it all happen, It's not so easy to make it all happen simply.

If anyone takes that onboard that I don't have the skills and took the easy route out, well fine! :P

Hope this helps, i created my own 1600 frame before the allspeed frame was avaible, i have retained the original mini subframe towers and upper arm mounts suitably strenghtened , and made a complete lower/front section from scratch for the engine/ lower suspension mounts, hang the engine where you want it before making the drive shafts to suite :? mine was in a clubman so i had room to play with, watch for manifold/bulkhead clearence, and also allow room for the exhaust to pass under the sump  if you got the kit to do it crack on :)
