View Full Version : Decent starter motor ?
Hi,
A mate has an 8v 1600 vaux lump in his Mini, and it is eating the PLASTIC!!?!?! gears in the starter.
Any ideas on a decent metal construction one that would suit ?

somethings not right there, can you get uprated/rally spec ones for the 1600 or other small bore vaux engines?

The one on my engine/box has a metal output gear,(i remember checking it when i painted the starter)its directly on the motor shaft too, ie no intermediate gears, the engine is out of An E reg nova GTE, as long as the gearbox is a F13/10 any starter from 1 litre to 1.6 nova or astra should fit, never heard of a plastic starter gear! hope this helps

Hi
Spag sent me the link and I joined up to the forum, I am the said mate ...
Minova is a 1981 mini with a 8 valve 1600 engine from a nova GSI but running a cavalier head twin 40 dhla carbs a F14 I think box with quaife straight cut gear set and LSD custom ground cam seriously worked engine and puts out 155 BHP.
Basically the main problem is likely to be a iffy PMA50 module on the ignition which I am about to swap out but the effect of iffy ignition has been the lunching of two starters, these starters are Valeo ones for the NOVA 1.6GSI the gear to flywheel is steel, but inside the starter the motor drives a small gear on the motor spindle and this sits in a nest of three gears which internally drive a ringgear which is the inside of the output shaft with the gear that drives the ring gear kinda hard to explain. The inside of this internal ring gear inside the motor is stripping and appears to be made of a dark grey plastic which is a carp idea.
Is there a alternative starter available from another model or from motorsport sources which either doesnt use internal gear reduction or does but with some substaintial gears.
Minova was built in 1997 prior to most vauxhall conversions so was done fairly differently, it retains standard length wings, subframe is mini with significant mods, and bulkhead has been significantly modded, the engine is sat really low, and the 40's actually clear the top rail by only about 1CM , so ripping of and replacing a starter is a really pain as its carbs manifolds pipework etc all of to get access.
Any help appeciated, I have the CCC mag and minworld spreads on the car if anyones interested in reading about it. someone advise how I upload them.

you need a starter motor off a astra 1.6 or late nova or corsa its the valeo type they good and pretty reliable and are light weight

Is it the yellow one???
yes its the yellow one, and is eating valeo starters for nova gsi's... luching the internal reduction gears in the motor.
though back together now and seems better with a new PMA50 module.
