Haveing jsut gone through the process of building my own frame, tbo mate your best jsut looking at as many pictures as you can, then just offering an engine up to the shell and seing for yourself how everythin ligns up!

even though id seen picture after picture including the ocational measurement of home made frames etc, nothing was as "clear" as seing the engine poised where it "should" be. IT realy does highlight problem areas etc.

And any drawings\plans people have, generally won't be too keen to give them out. You can't blame them really! Just think what could happen if fbm-spec's CAD drawings got into the wrong hands.... XE lump in a standard length roundnose.... LARGE MARKET! I can see why he outright refuses to let anyone have any of the CAD files. However take a look at his pics - as evo says, good starting point are pics from other people's frames, then actually offering up the engine and having a go at it.

drawings would take half the fun out of it!
not to mention the swearing, bloody knuckles, sleepless nights....

could always cmm it then you could have do all the wonderful stress analysis too. but then again, to copy someones work is pirating isnt it and not particularly freindly...

not if you alter it slightly different shapes, it could be done in 3d here using Catia

if you have the tools and software which we have at our place (ie cmm, autocad, ug etc.) you can just plonk it on the bed and probe away (!) until you have an exact model in 3D. Unless it was your own work or had permission to copy it I would say it isnt the way to go.

If you were doing it to improve a frame for your own needs fair play, but to step on the shoulders of someone elses work and not give recognition for it, well.....

we use catia for all our design work version 5 release 12 but it doesnt tell you what you need to do to the shell!
copy my frame by all means if you can do it for less good luck you need to have a lot of skills the r+d is pricless im sure if you ask Rob Hall how much hes spent over the years you could buy a nice house, its ok to want to do it cheap and not pay a mainstream conversion but think about all the hidden info its not just a frame and its mounting points but gear linkages radiator flows over heating problems differnt hose sizes, welds breaking? bugger give credit where its due and buy a properly made frame and the back up you get who ever it is that does it, an average research and development into say our porsche boxster/gt1 kit was £135k the frames we make cost us more than £500 to make in materials and labour before you think about rent rates national insurance public liability and of coures advertising, shows, brouchers.
they say hav a go harry killed aunty sally!
not without due corse.
when you buy a frame from z cars. rob or me or any one else for that matter what you get is the hours of time we will spend helping you, no 50p a minuite help lines here call me anytime ill offer advise wether it sells my product or not we do all we can as do the above so help us all dont just try and rip us of to save £1000 in the total cost of you conversion as it will always cost you more, i make more profit from finishing off a home brew conversion gone wrong then i do from selling the product on my site and im sure many will agree with me.
but good luck and keep trying the best ideas come from you doing your bit and helping us do our bit isnt sharing what its all about?
nope guess not its £1295 thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

why I don't condone pirating. our company has had experiences of this and when the customer tells us about it, we tell them thats the risk you take....
