this is a message i revieved from fbm-spec on this forum, when i asked him pretty much the same question. helped me out a great deal, just got to get around to buying one from halfords now

bike speedo on 16v mini.....

quite simple really .

first you will need to extend the wires to the reed switch ( the bit that normally goes on the bike forks ) .
for the magnet that is normaly fixed to the spokes. i simply araldited it to the drive shaft near to the centre bearing on the offside shaft . Then i made a 90 deg bracket to mount the reed switch sensor on .
the sigma ones are very good because the exact wheel size can be inputted for calibration . my 165 x 70 x 12 's are 1530mm in circumference , from memory i think with the sigma one you need to divide the circumference by 1.61 to convert km's to miles .

mine worked superb up to 100 mph ,,but would never read any quicker than that ...i think it was down to the reed switch ... they have a max operational speed of 30 / sec ...at 100 mph the wheels are turning 30 / sec

below 100 it calibration was spot on

A 120mph speedo for how much

Whats the read out? a wee digital display thing? I've abandoned the 16v project till I'm done uni, but have started my weekend road warrior race engined 1380 and the engine is well capable of 100hp+... Would consider this over my previous plan of using Clubman GT clocks... which read 115mph or something?

Cheers
