Hello all,

I'm thinking of changing my steering rack to a quick rack.

Does anyone know where i can get one from or if anyone makes one at all??

Its for my SAE kit but i've no idea what year the frame is from or if there is any difference between years.

Thanks Paulc

The SAE frame uses a Rover metro (K series) frame, all racks for these are the same except the GTi ones which had reduced lock 'cos of the big wheels.

I think Demon Tweeks list a quick rack for the Rover Metro, or failing that some MFG racks are quicker, but the same design.

I think Colin has one (MGF) fitted to his.

Is the steering that bad? If you go the quick rack route you might have to add power steering too.

Thanks Graham,

Its not too bad. I just have a lot of play in it. So need to change it really and thought whilst i was at it i would fit a quick rack.

I'll have a look round for a standard rack to replace it then.

Don't really want power steering........its for girls ah Mr W

Don't go quick rack if you intend to drive at over 80 mph ......I have standard rack and metro ( longer) steering arms (slow rack !! ) . At 120 mph it is very stable :D , at 140 mph it is getting a little twitchy.

Hope this helps..

Thanks Ray and Chris,

Someone said to me that there is a bush in the rack that you can hit with a punch and it will take the play out of it?

Has anyone heard of this?

is that a mini rack with metro arms then!?! bit confused. im running standard mini stuff and the steering is way to sensitive at v.high speeds.

That will be the ball joint at the inner end of the track rods. its a bodge used by backstreet garages and the like as a last ditch attempt to get a car through an MOT.

Get a recon rack, they aren't that expensive.

ok,

i'm finially getting round to ordering a rack and didn't realise how bloomin' cheap they are!!!!

I paid the same amount for the one i've got and its rubbish!!!

My question is:

its between the SR903 and SR723 from this site http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/steering-rack-display.php?txtmodel=Metro&txtmake=Rover&Submit=Next but can anyone tell me what they mean by 25mil pinion and 50mil pinion as thats the only difference i can see.

Thanks

Bit odd that. The only difference between Metro and Metro GTI rack as far as I know is that the GTi one had less lock to stop wheels rubbing.
