Hi Guys,
I have just rebuilt my motor, but still have a slight problem. One ( well i think it's just one ) of the hydualic valve lifters (tappet) is noisey. Not all the time but after a hi speed run  My problem is : How do i find which one it is ??

Get a mechanics stethoscope and use that. Very useful bit of kit

I've never had much luck with the stethoscope - it does identify which end the noise is from though...
Way i've always done them is to take off the rocker / cam cover, remove the plugs and (if you don't want to get a shock!) disconnect the LT side of the coil.
Crank it over for a few seconds, then get a small 'pry bar' (eg small screwdriver) under each lifter, and check them one by one, comparing each of them to the one next to it.
Bear in mind that the engine may have stopped with the lifters on the peak of the cam lobe, hence why you may not find it first time. keep sinning the engine over, and you'll figure it out eventually.
Incidentally, i say to remove the plugs, as some engines tend to stop in pretty much the same place a majority of the time... taking the compression out of the equation, means it stops in completerly random places each time...
There is probably a simpler way, but this has always worked for me. Just hope they cost less than the lifters in the engine in my mums Polo - £28 each!!!!

Think that would be very difficult with an xe mate, as the cams cover pretty much most the follower.
They make noise mostly when there is shitty oil in the follower, take them all out and give them a soak

Could you not use MattGs clever dyno to listen to the exhaust note, and tell you which follower it is.
