Hi All - firstly - SORRY !! I know this subject must be well over- mentioned by now, but ... I'm well confused :? Everyone says the standard metro gti brakes are fine for the front, but according to the Rover 100 Haynes manual I bought (can't remember the publication date off the top of my head so it may be out of date !!!) - all rover 100's (including GTi and GTa) use a single piston floating caliper with a solid disk ??
Is there a particular year GTi that you all get your brakes from ? And are your calipers all single piston ???
Cheers !

As Darren said. Only the Mpi GTi had the ventilated disks, as used later on the MGF. And the 7 spoke wheels were designed specifically to clear the wider disc/caliper combo.

Cheers peeps - does anyone know the thickness of the vented disc - and are the MGF/GTI discs exactly the same ?
Cheers again,
Rich

Dont know the thickness, but as far as I know the vented GTi and MGF discs are identical. This is the 1.8i MGF as opposed to any of the Trophy, TF ones.
If you take a look at some manufacturers sites (or indeed a halfords book) the part nos. for them are the same.

I am wondering about the brake setup on the Rover 100 (Rover Metro as well?). I am under the assumption that the front hubs are the same between these 2 cars (both have K-Series engines). Now I am hearing that there are different discs and calipers. Is this true? Do you know when these changes occurred? Thanks in advance.

the only difference on the older style vented disks was a spacer inbetween the two halves of the caliper ,this made the caliper just under half an inch wider so it could accomidate the wider vented disk ,not too sure on the k series set up ,but knowing rover the hubs and calipers are probably the same

The K series caliper is the single piston sliding type, and this part is the same on both IIRC. Its the carrier part that the caliper slides on which is wider to allow for a wider disc.
As stated the rest of the setup is the same.
It is worth noting also that the steering arms, and IIRC, bottom balljoints are different on the GTi (possibly only Mpi) models too, to give a slightly better geometry with the wider tyres fitted to these models.

Had another look last night, seems the calipers that came with the P&L frame are different from the mpi GTi calliper - so I might go to the scrappies soon and see what I can dig out !!!
Thank again !

From what I can gether, despite popular belief, the caliper on a standard Rover 111/114 must be different to the GTI calliper - there's no spacer on the one's I've got, and I can't see how a vented disc would fit as there's only space for the solid disc. Maybe someone with vented discs could take some close-up photo's of the their caliper/disc, and I'll do the same for the one's I've got. Its all far too confusing - think I'll sleep at my desk for a bit !!!
Could be a handy section to add to the gallery "Identifying parts" - could add pics/details of all sorts of things that can be used in various stages of a build (not just brakes) ?
