The (92? on) 1.4Si was 16valve aswell wasn't it?
These were quite common motors, much more so than the GTa/i
i would normally have checked on the parkers website but i think you have to pay now to get to all the car stats now

Hi, does the 114 GSi have a 16V engine in it???
Cheers
found it on parkers:-
rover 100

no 16v i think
rover metro
http://www.parkers.co.uk/choosing/tech_data/index.aspx?range_id=235
only gta 16v (90bhp) and gti 16v (103bhp)
going to go look round the local scrappies and check out some 214s and 414s. is there anyway to tell which engines are the 90bhp/103bhp or spi/mpi units?
dont know if this is the right place for the link but here goes:
http://www.rover100.co.uk/
full of details bout metros and the gti - right down to the wheel trims!!!
another site with some tips on rover gtis etc.

The difference is huge !!!
The SPi has a single throttle body mounted to (on top of) an ally manifold. The air filter is black and mounted on top of the throttle body. The Air filter has a snorkel that comes forward over the top of the rocker cover, the rocker cover has a recess moulded into it for the snorkel. The exhaust manifold is a large short 4 into 1 cast unit. The SPi is the 90 (with cat) and 95 (without cat) version.
The MPi has a black plenum chamber with the word "injection" cast into it. The Throttle body is mounted to the right hand side of the plenum and has a "remote" airfilter casing mounted above the gearbox. There is no recess in the rocker cover. The exhaust manifold is a much more efficient (and smaller) design - I'm not 100% sure but I think it is a 4-2-1. The MPi is 103 bhp and had a cat !
Hope that helps.

Thanks for that reply Oz, saved me a lot of typing
One point re the exhaust manifolds. The Mpi is definitely 4-2-1 (at least the manifold is 4-2, and the bolt on downpipe provides the 2-1  ), but some (possibly just early ones) are still cast, and not so small....

Also the later Mpi engines ( from about N reg) were fitted with a plastic plenum, much lighter and neater.
I think it was about this time that the "damp" liner came in, meaning that an upgrade to 1600 or even 1800cc is possible using the same block - a lot of hassle unless you have the relevant liners, pistons and rods to hand

I'm not too "au fait" with the MPi but I used to have an 16v GTa so I'm alright with the SPi motor ! I did look at upgrading it to a MPi but decided to sell it to buy and tune my current Mini instead !!
I've got to admit I've got a soft spot for the K series after owning that Metro ! I did look at a 1600 or 1800 K series conversion but the vtec just seemed to be a better fit (round nosed mini) as the engine was physically smaller and you could keep the servo !!
thats one of my reasons for going for a k series engine. in the metro it will hit 60 in 8.5 seconds, so at a later if i choose to i can just change over the engine, though if i go for the 1.8/vvc i believe the 1.8 gearbox needs to be taken over as well. thanks for the tips by the way, going to go look at one tomorow night so hopefully will begin getting it ready the end of this month.

The gearbox everyone seems to go for when running large K engines is the post 96? Rover 214/25 1400K-series unit. A few minor mods to the selector apparently...
the best overall gearbox ive been told is the post '96 216 gearbox, due to it being more stronger and reliable. pity the only one i know is in my bro in laws car..... for now anyways ;)

The 216 box is supposedly stronger, and people seem to favour this for a 1.8 swap. That said some have used a 1.4 box with no problems.
The 1.8 box (PG1, a whole different animal), much better/stronger, and will apparently fit with a few mods. The drive shafts need to be changed, but the earlier MGF items will fit as they basically used Metro frame and suspension.
