View Full Version : B16a or............?

Should I just get the B16a as they are fairly cheap and in large supply, with the possibility to modify later, or start with one of the other multitude of available Vtec engines?

Is getting one of the beefier engines worth it or am I asking for trouble?

I would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers

Or if you want silly fast, you can try a B20 conversion with a VTEC head.... :)

Thought you guys had shedloads of Hondas over there?

A B20 does not give you shed loads of power, if you "simply" (Term used loosely) put a vtec head on the b20, you will not recieve anywhere near as much power as a B18c5.

The b20 does not rev anywhere near what a B18 can either. :(

To build a fast B20 over here you are lookin at the wrong end of £3k :(

Mine owes me £1.9k already, and it's still waiting to get machined and put together, if I want her to rev high, I need to either get my crank and rods sorted, or get an ITR's  , then you have fueling, what do you do? Then mapping ..........................And as you know, the only way to kill a Honda is to smash it  so finding a B20 (especially in scotland) is a rare oppertunity

You could always do a search on the net scrap yards for a Type R, I paid £1,500+vat for mine, and it came complete with radiator, burnt loom, drive shafts and delivery.

There are still scrap yards out there that haven’t a clue what they’re selling.

B20... how can you compare a "frankenstein" motor with the Integra Type R motor? They're worlds apart in lots of things, specifically, price!

The B20 can be built up quite well from what I've seen. A *lot* more torque than the B16s can offer from what I can recall.

No matter what I put in the Mini, it's not going to stay stock. If I can find a B16, that'll go in...same with a B18. Probably won't go the B20 route though.

You said a B20 would be silly fast, an ITR is silly fast, with a simple buildup on stock internals you can achieve the same HP figures with a B18c5 and B20b/B20z(Latter has better compression on standard internals) But the B20 will not rev to dizzy heights like the ITR :( And if you build a B20 using ITR head, internals(With same spec 84mm pistons) gearbox etc, then you would get silly fast.......Real fast!!!

The going rate for a B18c5 is £2.7k

As for whatever engine you use, I wouldn't expect you to keep it stock :D

I wasn't having a go at you, simply stating that simply bolting the head up to a B20 will not be silly fast :(

Oh, I agree... a regular 'ole B20 with like a B16 head probably won't get you to the store much quicker than a B16A :)

To get the B18C5 out here we're lookin at close to $5,000 US if not over. Probably the same amount for the B16A3...both of which I'd like to have! Then again, I'd like to have my job here in the US and get paid straight across in pounds rather than have to convert it all, too. And while I'm at it, how about a money tree ? :)

Ach. I just wanna get my project started. Can't even get an engine out here in Hawaii... well, I probably can, if I want to spend about 4,000US for the frickin motor and gearbox. Looks like I'll have to ship it from the west coast of the US. I swear...I love livin' here, but it's so terribly inconvenient at times. :D
